Description
Named after Shakespeare's tragic heroine in Othello, if you love subtle beauty and charm, the Desdemona English Shrub Rose will bring elegance and fragrance to your outdoor space without being overly dramatic. In flushes from spring through the first frost in fall, Desdemona's peachy pink buds open to beautiful, pearlescent, chalice-shaped blooms with pearl white incurved petals softly tinged in pink that are excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. But what really sets her apart is the lovely fragrance, which David Austin says has "the strong Old Rose fragrance with hints of almond blossom, cucumber and lemon zest." Very hardy, handling cold and heat and humidity in USDA Zones 5 through 11, Desdemona forms a very attractive, neat, rounded shrub to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide making for a good fit in sunny to partially shaded smaller garden beds or containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting areas where the pretty flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed from close up. Desdemona is sure to be a sensory charm in the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and about 3 feet wide, the Desdemona English Shrub Rose is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a hedge in sunny to partially shaded borders. Her smaller stature makes for a good fit in containers that can be situated on or around patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to cottage gardens, white or pink theme gardens, cutting gardens, antique and old-fashioned gardens, and fragrance and sensory gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Desdemona English Shrub Rose is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full to mostly sun for the best flowering. That said, some filtered sun during the midafternoon hours is okay. Flowering is best if the plant receives at least 5 hours of direct sun per day. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves.
