Description

Discovered as a witch's broom, the Dobrichovive Nordman Fir is a delightful evergreen conifer with some of the darkest green foliage we've seen on a fir. The pleasantly fragrant deep green curved needles have contrasting, prominent, silver-white undersides. Orange-brown buds at the tips of the stems add to the overall appeal. A slow grower that adds 4 inches in size per year, it has a flat-topped to rounded form when young, becoming a dense pyramid 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at its base when all grown up, making it a good fit for small garden spaces, rock gardens, and containers. It is easy to grow in full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Conifers don't like being moved, so choose the right spot for this eye-catching beauty, preferably one with well-drained but moist soil and five or more hours of sunlight daily.

Landscape & Garden Uses

A slow grower to 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at its base over time, the Dobrichovive Dwarf Nordmann Fir is an eye-catching specimen in smaller garden spaces or spaced groupings at 7 feet or more apart where space allows. It is also suitable for containers on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, alpine gardens, and Asian gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  7 to 8 feet apart for spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

The Dobrichovive Dwarf Nordmann Fir is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. It will grow well in full sun or partial shade. We suggest five or more hours of sunlight daily for the best overall performance. It will handle short dry spells but will appreciate occasional supplemental water to maintain moist soil during extended summer droughts.
