Description
Watermelon Deluxe is an adorable Coneflower in the Double Scoop Echinacea series. It features abundant double flowers from late spring through summer above a mound of clean, rich green foliage. Deluxe varieties are more compact with better branching and produce more flowers than other double-flowered coneflowers. They bloom during their first year, and the flowers don't bleach out like other varieties. The eye-catching flowers feature a dense pom-pom of vibrant, dark pink petals surrounded by a skirt of bright pink petals. The flowers are perched atop sturdy stems that rise above the foliage mound and are excellent for cutting and use in a vase or flower arrangement. Reaching maybe 24 inches tall in bloom and nearly as wide, Watermelon Deluxe is a fine accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or grouped where space allows. Drought, deer, heat, humidity, poor soil tolerance, and a sizzling show of color throughout the summer, what more can we and the butterflies and hummingbirds ask for?
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 26 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, the Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers, or grouped or as a border in perennial gardens and sunny woodland borders. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, wildflower gardens, and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 1.5 feet apart for groupings; 3 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Watermelon Deluxe Coneflower is very easy to grow. It is a highly adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil. It will grow in most moist but well-drained soils of average fertility. It flowers best in full sun but also does well and blooms in part shade. Five or more hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Spent flowers can be removed through the long bloom season. That said, towards the end of the bloom season, we always leave some spent flowers/seed heads on the plant for winter interest and to feed the birds.
