Description

A hummingbird's dream come true, the Dragon Lady Crossvine is an exceptionally adaptable, easy-to-grow and fast-growing North American native flowering vine that quickly covers fences (from top to bottom), arbors and other structures. In spring, and reblooming in fall in our gardens, it produces LOADS of trumpet-shaped, nectar-rich, ruby red flowers with orange and pink tints. Tolerant of both drought and wet soils, full sun or shade, and more cold hardy than other varieties, Dragon Lady is a truly magnificent flowering vine that deserves a spot in every landscape and garden where it will grow (USDA Zones 5a-11). Perfect for growing on a fence, rail, post, pole, trellis, obelisk, arch, arbor or pergola, and will even climb trees. The hummingbirds and butterflies are sure to find the red flowers and will thank you for planting this one!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 30 feet or more in height or length depending on the height or width of the support structure, the Dragon Lady Crossvine is ideal for use to climb on and cover fences from top to bottom! Rather than grow along just the top of a fence, the vines cascade all the way down to the ground to entirely cover the fence! Also ideal for use to cover a trellis, arch, arbor, pergola or any other structure that will support the vine. A fine addition to hummingbird and butterfly gardens, red theme gardens, tropical look gardens, native gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart to cover fences

Growing Preferences

The Dragon Lady Red Crossvine is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun to part shade. It grows in full sun or shade however flowers heavier with more sun. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for full flowering. Plants are quite drought tolerant when established and will also tolerate wet soils. Pruning isn't necessary, however the vines can be trimmed after flowering to keep tidy, which might enhance the rebloom.
