Description
Destined to be an award-winner, Dream Cloud is a new Manchurian Lilac with a unique color to the species. it forms a dense rounded mound to 5 feet tall and wide that is smothered large clusters up to 12 inches long and 9 inches wide that are packed with intoxicatingly fragrant pink to lavender-pink flowers in late spring to early summer. We've only grown this one in our North Carolina gardens (Zone 6), but hear it is hardy to Zone 8. That said, to be on the safe side, we'd suggest some midafternoon shade in Zone 8. Butterflies will flock to the flowers, and they are excellent for cutting and display in a vase or floral arrangement. Heart-shaped green leaves turn to purple-red shades in the fall, adding another beautiful color show. Those in humid climates may be pleased to know that it is more resistant to powdery mildew than other Syringa species. Dream Cloud is an excellent choice as an accent, grouping, or hedge in sunny landscape borders or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Dream Cloud Lilac is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces and pots, or in groupings, or as a hedge in larger landscape borders. Perfect near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor living spaces, where the pretty flowers and delicious fragrance can be enjoyed up close. A fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, cottage gardens, cut-flower gardens, butterfly gardens, or pink-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3.5 to 4 feet for solid hedges and grouping; 7 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Plant your Dream Cloud Lilac in moist, but well-drained, soil of average fertility and in full sun to part shade. It prefers a pH close to neutral (6.5 to 7.5). Add pelletized lime if your soil is highly acidic. Fertilize in early spring with a light application of an organic plant food or a slow-release shrub and tree-type fertilizer. Prune as desired for shaping purposes or to control size immediately after bloom.
