Description

'Columnaris Nana' is a dwarf European Hornbeam with an upright, conical, or columnar habit, depending on if and how you prune it. Left to grow naturally, it will form a narrow cone 10 to 12 feet tall and 4-6' wide at its base over time. With annual pruning in late winter, it can be maintained as a narrower column at 2 to 3 feet wide. Lower branches can be removed to form a popsicle-like topiary, and the canopy can be topped and rounded to create a lollipop form. The attractive, obovate, toothed green leaves are exceptionally dense on the tree and turn vibrant golden-yellow in fall, making it a possible candidate for a hedgerow where space is limited. A distinct exclamation point in the landscape.

Wildlife Attributes
If you're into butterflies and other wildlife, Hornbeam is a larval host plant for the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Red-spotted Purple butterflies. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail has three flights from February to November in the deep south and March to September in the north. The Red-spotted Purple has two broods from April to October. The seed and buds provide food sources for songbirds, ruffed grouse, quail, wild turkeys, foxes, and squirrels. The canopy also provides good cover and shelter for animals.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 12 feet tall and 2 to 6 feet wide depending on pruning, the Dwarf Columnar Hornbeam is an excellent vertical specimen for an exclamation point in small landscape spaces, containers, and home foundation plantings, in groupings where space allows, or two can be used to frame an entrance. It responds well to pruning to form a narrow column. It is a fine addition to butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, and formal and topiary gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 7 or more feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Dwarf Columnar European Hornbeam Tree is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soils of average fertility and full sun or partial shade. It appreciates some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the heat and sunlight are most intense in hot summer climates. Maintenance is minimal, though it responds well to pruning to maintain a narrow column, which requires only one trimming per year in late winter or early spring.
