Description

A sensational and easy-to-grow North American native flowering shrub that provides multi-season interest and sensory appeal in the landscape. In spring, Dwarf Fothergilla features loads of soft-textured, wonderfully fragrant, honey-scented, pure-white, bottlebrush-like inflorescences at the ends of every stem that the butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will thank you for. After flowering, handsome, leathery, blue-green to green leaves cloth the stems turning to brilliant shades of gold, orange and red in fall. An outstanding ornamental shrub!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 foot wide, Dwarf Fothergilla is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a natural low hedge in landscape, flowering shrub and woodland borders. Especially nice near the garden pond or other bodies of water and a fine addition to North American native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, butterfly gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for solid borders;  6 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Dwarf Fothergilla is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance free when planted right and in the right spot. It prefers a moist but well-drained acidic soil of average to high fertility and sun or part shade. In hot and dry climates it will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of the afternoon.
