Description
An extremely rare variety that came from a witches broom on a Twisted Hinoki Cypress, Chameacyparis obtusa 'Torulosa Nana' is a dwarf form that looks much like its parent but with everything 1/3 the size. A very slow grower, the twisted and irregular foliage forms on a more compact plant that might reach 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide in 10 years featuring reddish bark and dark green foliage. The dark green, twisted scale-like leaves are highly ornamental and evergreen. An excellent specimen in small rock or Asian gardens and is perfect in containers and a fine candidate for bonsai.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly in an irregular mounding form to 3 feet tall and wide in 10 years, the Dwarf Twisted Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as a specimen in small gardens. Also great containers where it is also an excellent subject for bonsai. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian themed gardens, bonsai gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Dwarf Twisted Hinoki Cypress is very easy to grow in a well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. Maintenance is minimal with no pruning required unless for bonsai or topiary. Provide a light application of slow release shrub and tree fertilizer in spring.
