Description

The state symbol and state tree of Ohio, the Ohio Buckeye, is a beautiful tree with four-season appeal. Early Glow™ is an attractive and durable selection that takes things to the next level. Unlike other Ohio buckeyes, it sets very little, if any, fruit, ensuring minimal litter. Its superior leaf blotch and scorch resistance means healthy, dark green foliage through the warm seasons and an earlier than typical, brilliant red fall color display, hence the name. The abundant panicle clusters of yellow-green flowers contrast nicely with the bright green leaves in mid-spring. At around 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide when all grown up, the Early Ohio Buckeye is a revolutionary buckeye that makes for a fine specimen planted in the sunny to partially shaded landscape where its spring flowers, attractive form, and outstanding foliage can be appreciated.

Notes: The Early Glow™ Buckeye has exhibited superior resistance to leaf blotch, leaf scorch, and mildew compared to typical Aesculus glabra varieties, resulting in a much-improved leaf hold later through the season.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 25 to 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide, the Early Glow Ohio Buckeye is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in groupings where space allows. It provides beauty and shade around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to North American native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, woodland gardens, and yellow-theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  25+ feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Early Glow Ohio Buckeye is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance-free when planted in the right spot. It grows well in most any consistently moist but well-drained soil of average to high fertility and sun or part sun. Though it will tolerate short periods of drought when established, it prefers consistently moist soil, especially during the summer months, but not constantly soggy. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade. We suggest five or more hours of direct sunlight daily for the best flowering, foliage color, and overall performance.
