Description

Having everything we admire in a classic mophead-type Hydrangea, Elizabeth Ashley is a superb reblooming variety featuring large, perfectly shaped and uniform clusters of pretty flowers in subtle, old-timey shades of pink, lavender-purple or blue with contrasting green eyes. You can choose the color. An acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.5 on the pH scale creates blue flowers. A neutral soil around 6.5 to 7.5 creates flowers in lavender shades while an alkaline soil above 7.5 pH results in pink flowers. Beginning in late spring to early summer, the number of flower clusters this one produces is amazing, and it's a rebloomer that will continue blooming on new growth throughout the summer. The flowerheads are perched atop tall, thick stems which prevents flopping and makes them perfect for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. At around 3 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up, Elizabeth Ashley is a perfect fit for small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a low hedge where space allows.

This gorgeous hydrangea was named in honor of Elizabeth Ashley Hoke, the daughter of a hydrangea hybridizer. Elizabeth, an aspiring biologist herself, was killed in an automobile accident just before she was to begin college. This plant is meant to share the vibrancy and thirst for life that Elizabeth shared with her friends and family.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, Elizabeth Ashley Hydrangea is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in garden beds, landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Its smaller stature makes it perfect for pots, planters and other containers that can be situated on patios or around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and Hydrangea gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2-2.5 feet apart for solid hedges;  5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Elizabeth Ashley Hydrangea is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade, depending on your climate. Plants will tolerate full sun in cool-summer northern zones however appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in hot-summer climates in the South. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. You can choose the flower color. An acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.5 on the pH scale creates blue flowers. Apply Aluminum Sulfate to acidify soil. A neutral soil around 6.5 to 7.5 creates flowers in lavender shades while an alkaline soil above 7.5 pH results in pink flowers. Apply pelletized agricultural lime to sweeten soil. This is a reblooming Hydrangea that produces blooms on both the old wood from the previous year and new growth in the current year. Therefore, you want to prune it as you would other reblooming Hydrangeas such as the Endless Summer.
