Special Attributes
The perfect exclamation point in small garden spaces and dwarf or miniature gardens, the 'Ellwood's Pillar' is a slow-growing Lawson's Cypress that forms a very narrow spire that might reach 6 to 7 feet tall and a foot or so in width when all grown up. It features soft, grayish-blue-green foliage that stays green year-round and never needs pruning. Easy to grow in sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, Ellwood's Pillar is a true gem for small garden spaces or pots for situating on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly in a very narrow spire 6 to 7 feet tall and maybe a foot or so in width, Ellwood's Pillar Lawon's Cypress is ideal for use as a vertical accent in small garden spaces and dwarf or miniature gardens, to fill narrow spaces in home foundation plantings or as a centerpiece in pots, planters, and other containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, gnome gardens, blue-theme gardens, Asian gardens, and miniature gardens.
Growing Preferences
Ellwood's Pillar Lawson Cypress is easy to grow in any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun to partial shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Heat is hardy in Zones 5-8, but we've heard it will do fine in cool-summer climates to Zone 9. It will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon in hot-summer climates. Whether growing in the ground or pots, constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic, so avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought-tolerant and will only require an occasional drink during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning is required except to remove a stray branch tip spoiling the plant's shape.
