Special Attributes

Truly a gem and perfect for small garden spaces, 'Elwood's Pigmy' is a dense conifer sporting outstanding powder-blue foliage on an upright columnar form. Slow growing, it adds only 2 to 4 inches in height per year maturing to about 6 feet tall an 18 inches wide over time. Its smaller stature make it a perfect choice for small garden spaces and containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing slowly to 6 feet tall and 15 to 18 inches wide at the base, Ellwood's Pygmy Cypress is ideal for use as a vertical accent or in groupings in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings where space is limited. It makes a fine centerpiece in pots, planters and other containers provided there is good drainage. A fine addition to Asian themed gardens, conifer gardens, rock gardens, miniature gardens and  Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Growing Preferences

Ellwood's Pygmy Lawson Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Heat hardy in Zones 5-7 but we've heard it will do fine in cool-summer climates to zone 9. In hot-summer climates it will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon. Whether growing in the ground or in pots, constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic, so avoid overwatering. Provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought tolerant and will only require an occasional drink during prolonged periods of drought. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to remove a stray branch tip that is spoiling the shape of the plant.
