Description
'Emerald Mound' is a dwarf Bush Honeysuckle featuring pretty flowers, colorful berries, and handsome, colorful foliage. When left to grow naturally, it forms a broad mound to only 3 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide when all grown up. It can be kept smaller with trimming. However, we like it best when left undisturbed to showcase its attractive, eucalyptus-like round leaves. Abundant pairs of small, cute, fragrant creamy yellow flowers adorn the plant in mid to late spring, which the hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate. The birds will thank you for the equally abundant red berries that follow the flowers. You might be happy to know deer, rabbits, damaging insects, and diseases leave this one alone. Easy to grow, the Emerald Mound Honeysuckle is excellent as a specimen, in groupings, or as a low hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders or home foundation plantings. While it thrives in full sun in Zones 4 and 5, we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours in Zone 6.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 2 to 3 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Emerald Mound Bush Honeysuckle is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and container gardens, or in groupings or as a hedge where space allows. It is also a nice accent in home foundation plantings. It is a fine selection for humming gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and fragrance gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Emerald Mound Bush Honeysuckle is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. In USDA Zones 4 and 5 it will tolerate full sun but will appreciate some shade or filtered sun in Zone 6. We do not recommend this plant for hot-summer climates south of Zone 6. We've seen no serious insect or disease problems and deer and rabbits aren't interested.
