USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-8b  Find Your Zone

Special Attributes

Fiji Hibiscus, often called rose of sharon or althea, produces loads of striking 4 inch diameter flowers with pink to white petals accentuated with pink to lavender markings that surround a deep fuchsia-red center from July through September, bringing welcome color to the summer landscape. Fiji has performed extremely well in our gardens here in Zone 8a of mid-Georgia and the flowers are a magnet to butterflies and hummingbirds. If at all possible, make sure to plant this one where you can watch these winged beauties feed on the flowers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Fiji Hibiscus is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny landscape borders. As this hibiscus grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a small focal point specimen tree that serves as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders or home foundation plantings. A fine addition to cottage gardens and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 5 feet apart for hedges;  10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Rose of Sharon are very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. Some light shade is tolerated but too much shade and plants might become floppy and flowering is diminished. When established, plants are tolerant of dry soil conditions.
