Description

Asclepias speciosa, commonly known as Showy Milkweed, is a butterfly dream plant. It is similar to Common Milkweed but more well-behaved; therefore, it might be a better choice for garden beds. As its name suggests, it features showy clusters of very fragrant, pink to pinkish-purple crown-shaped flowers with longer petals than other milkweeds. Showy Milkweed is an excellent nectar source and food for the larval stages of Monarch and Queen butterflies. The flowers attract many species of butterflies. Its foliage is also showy, having much larger, soft gray-green, oval-shaped leaves that turn bright gold in fall. A native to North America, Native to the western U.S. and upper Midwest, it tolerates various soil types and conditions and is very drought tolerant when established.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Showy Milkweed is ideal for an accent, grouping, or mass planting in sunny garden beds and woodland borders. It is a fine addition to butterfly gardens, bog gardens, perennial gardens, native gardens, wildflower gardens, wetland gardens, cottage gardens, and pink theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2 feet apart for groupings; 6 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Showy Milkweed is exceptionally easy to grow and care for. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and six or more hours of sunlight daily. Too much shade will diminish flowering. Plant it with the top of the root ball even with the ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with a portion of organic plant food.
