Description
Discovered and introduced by G. Donig in Germany, 'Franken' is a rare and beautiful selection of the European Beech Tree adored for its showy variegated foliage and diminutive size compared to its larger growing cousins. Slow-growing, it forms a small pyramidal tree that might reach 10 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide at its base when all grown up, making it a good fit as a focal point in smaller landscape spaces and containers. Its new leaves emerge creamy white colored, becoming dramatic variegated dark green mottled and speckled in cream-white as the season progresses. More sun might add some pink to the leaves. Sometimes, the variegation is more prominent on the second flush of leaves during the season, and as the tree ages, the variegation becomes increasingly prominent every year that goes by. Due to its heavy variegation, it appreciates protection from direct sunlight in the afternoon with some shade or dappled shade. Morning and evening sun are fine. Franken is a must-have for rare plant connoisseurs who love variegated plants and is sure to be an eye-catching conversation piece in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly up to 12 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Franken Variegated European Beech is ideal as a focal point specimen in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. Its smaller size makes it suitable for containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Since it is such a beautiful and unique tree, avoid overcrowding it with other plants. It is a fine addition to white theme gardens and partially shaded woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Space plants 7 feet or more apart for groupings.
Growing Preferences
Franken Variegated European Beech is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and partial shade. Morning and evening sun are okay, but provide dappled shade or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. No pruning is required except to remove a stray stem spoiling the tree's shape.
