Description
One of, if not the brightest, of the Abelia varieties growing in our gardens, Funshine is an evergreen flowering shrub that forms a 2 to 3-foot tall and wide mound of sunshine in the landscape. It has glowing golden new growth that emerges from contrasting caramel-orange mature foliage. Through summer and well into fall, abundant light purple fragrant flowers will draw in hummingbirds and butterflies. Excellent as an accent, in groupings, or as a low hedge, and easy to grow and adaptable, Funshine will grow well in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, in sun or shade, and is drought tolerant when established. You might also be happy that deer and rabbits turn their nose to Abelia.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a low mound 2 to 3 feet tall and equally wide, the Funshine Abelia has many uses in the landscape. Its smaller size fits nicely as an accent or specimen in smaller landscape spaces, pots, planters, and other containers. In larger landscape spaces, we use it in groupings or mass plantings in landscape borders, on embankments, or for low hedges. Since it will grow in sun or shade, it's the perfect choice for underplanting small to mid-size trees such a crape myrtle, taller growing upright Japanese maples, chaste tree (Vitex), or other small trees. It is a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, Asian-themed gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs)

Growing Preferences
Funshine Abelia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or shade. We suggest three or more hours of direct sunlight daily for the brightest foliage color. It is drought tolerant when established but does not like a constantly waterlogged soil. Maintenance is minimal. We prune our Abelia for shaping purposes once a year in late winter or early spring. Plants respond very well to occasional shearing for hedges or formal shapes throughout the growing season. It is evergreen in zones 8a-9b and might be semi-deciduous some winters in zones 6a-7b.
