Description
One of if not the most cold-hardy Agapanthus available, Galaxy White Lily of the Nile handles winter low temperatures to -10F in USDA Zone 6! Living up to its name, this beauty showcases a "galaxy' of star-shaped pure-white flowers in large, 5-inch diameter globe-shaped clusters perched atop tall, sturdy stems that make them excellent for cutting and display in a vase or floral arrangement. The flowers stand above a large 4-foot by 4-foot dense clump of attractive, strap-like green leaves. The bloom in our north-central Georgia gardens begins near mid-summer and continues through early fall, which the butterflies and hummingbirds appreciate. An excellent choice for providing a tropical flair in perennial borders or as solitary or mixed with other plants in container gardens. We've never tried it, but we hear that Agapanthus can be grown year-round as an indoor houseplant when provided adequate light. We know that it can easily be overwintered indoors in areas where it is not winter-hardy outdoors.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Galaxy White Agapanthus is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings or as a grouping or border in larger spaces. It is also a nice solo plant in containers or accent in mixed container gardens. It is a fine addition to perennial gardens, rock gardens, blue-themed gardens, and tropical-look gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 42 inches apart for groupings or solid borders; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Agapanthus is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. The more sun, the better for best flowering. When established, plants are moderately drought tolerant but will appreciate supplemental irrigation for best performance. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Apply pelletized agricultural lime annually to keep them blooming heavy year after year!
