Description
Garden Gems™ is a revolutionary series of compact Redbud trees for small gardens and patio spaces. The richly colored foliage gives a similar effect as a Japanese Maple, but on a North American tree that also produces a color show of purple-pink blooms in spring on naked branches before the foliage emerges.
As with its siblings, the 'Amethyst Cascade' Redbud, the newest member of the Garden Gems collection, is a weeping selection that might reach 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide when all grown up. In early spring, before its foliage emerges, its gracefully weeping branches are covered in abundant clusters of sparkling, pinkish-purple pea-like flowers. As the bloom ends, new leaves emerge in shades of dark purple to amethyst. As the season progresses, the leaves transition to handsome dark blue-green shades, with any new leaves emerging in reddish-purple. An easy-to-grow North American native flowering tree for USDA Zones 5-9, meaning it will tolerate winter low temperatures to -20F and stand up to heat and humidity in hot climates, Amethyst Cascade's smaller size makes it a good fit for smaller garden spaces or in containers that can be situated on sunny to partially shaded patios and decks or around other outdoor sitting or living spaces. This is one of those trees that will always have you looking forward to spring and then delighting with its graceful form and presence throughout the rest of the year.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to about 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the garden Gems Amethyst Cascade Redbud tree is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in smaller garden spaces and large containers of 18 inches or more in diameter. In large spaces, it works well in spaced groupings 10 feet or more apart. Two can be used to frame an entrance. It is especially nice around patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the pretty flowers and handsome foliage can be enjoyed from close up. For eye-pleasing contrast, underplant with a light-colored ground cover plant such as Creeping Jenny or thyme. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, native gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen; 10 feet or more apart for space between trees in groupings
Growing Preferences
The Garden Gems Amethyst Cascade Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most moist but well-drained soils with average fertility and full or partial sun. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. It does not require pruning, but it responds well to it for shaping purposes or size control.
