Description

One of our favorites of the tall growing Arborvitae trees, George Peabody is a tall growing North American native Thuja selection sporting attractive golden-yellow foliage year round, even throughout the winter months. It is a an upright, somewhat narrow variety that might reach 25 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide when all grown up, making it an excellent and more colorful choice and alternative to 'Green Giant' as a specimen, grouping or privacy screen. It will add a foot or more of new growth per year. The golden foliage is scale-like and appears in flat, fan-shaped clusters. Attractive, small, reddish-brown urn-shaped cones to 1/2 inch long contrast nicely with the foliage. Easy to grow and stands up to snow and wind in USDA Zones 2a-8b.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing naturally in a narrow, pyramidal shape 25 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, George Peabody Arborvitae is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping or privacy screen in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. Also excellent to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings and structures. great for use in the landscape or in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, North American native plant gardens, rock gardens, Asian gardens and yellow-themed color.

Spacing:  8 feet apart for solid hedges and privacy screens;  16 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The George Peabody Arborvitae is very easy to grow and care for. It is adaptable to many soil types including red clay, preferring moist but well-drained conditions. It doesn't like an overly dry or wet site but has moderate drought tolerance when established. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or waterlogged soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required. In hot summer climates it might appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon.
