Description

Presented the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society for good reasons, the Giant Chain Fern is considered the largest growing native fern in North America. It is an evergreen that forms a towering clump of arching, fishbone-like, beautiful large fronds up to 8 feet tall! In its native habitats, it thrives in moist, shady areas but not constantly soggy soils. It looks lovely around garden ponds and other bodies of water and in woodland gardens. Though drought tolerant when established, it prefers consistently moist soil, especially during the warmer summer months. It prefers cool to mild summers, so provide it with more shade in hot summer climates, with afternoon shade a must. It can be grown outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 8a to 10b, and in USDA Zones 7 and colder, it can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors. This captivating beauty is sure to be a conversation piece in the garden.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Giant Chain Fern is ideal as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or containers that can be situated in or around outdoor or indoor sitting and living spaces. It can be planted in groupings or as a border where spaces allow. It looks lovely around boulders, near garden ponds and other bodies of water, or beneath the canopies of large trees. Just make sure its permanent home gets no direct afternoon sun. Filtered all-day sun or morning or evening sun are okay. It is a fine addition to native plant gardens, fern gardens, woodland gardens, wetland gardens, and shady rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 9 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Giant Fern is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soils and part shade to shade. All-day dappled sunlight is okay...just no direct afternoon sun. Once established, it has moderate drought tolerance but prefers consistently moist soil, especially during summer. It does not like constantly soggy or wet soil. This fern will grow outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 8a-10b, preferring cool to mild summer climates. In hot summer climates, it will do best in more shade and with limited exposure to direct afternoon sun. In Zones 7 and colder, container-grown plants can be overwintered indoors.
