As its name suggests, Miscanthus giganteus, commonly known as Giant Miscanthus, is a tall, robust, and striking ornamental grass that commands a presence and draws attention in the landscape. A rapid grower, it forms a stately, upright, dense clump to 12 feet high in flower and 4 to 6 feet wide, with bamboo-like stems clothed in arching, dark green leaves, making it a fine choice as a focal point specimen, in a grouping, as a background plant, or as a privacy screen. Its foliage turns burnt-orange and golden-brown shades in fall, becoming tan shades in winter. In late summer, pinkish-red fluffy plumes are perched on sturdy stalks above the foliage, turning to silvery white as they age. It's a sterile hybrid, so there's no need to worry about seeds that would self-sow. Easy to grow and long-lived, Giant Miscanthus thrives in six or more hours of sunlight daily and moist, well-drained soil. However, its deep root system makes it drought-tolerant once established. It is also deer-resistant and heat-tolerant to Zone 9b, as well as cold-tolerant to Zone 4a, where average winter low temperatures are 30°F.

Giant Miscanthus Grass is easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay, and six or more hours of sunlight daily. It has a deep root system that provides high drought tolerance once established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so ensure the planting site is well-drained.
