Description

Introduced in 1947, 'Gibraltar' is an extremely reliable cold hardy Exbury Azalea that displays large clusters or lightly fragrant glowing tangerine-orange to deep orange flowers with exquisitely ruffled petals that light up the garden in mid to late spring, depending on your location. A loyal and gorgeous deciduous Rhododendron that puts on an absolutely stunning color display in the spring garden!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Gibraltar Azalea is a ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in partially shaded landscape borders, home foundation plants and woodland borders. Also nice in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to Azalea/Rhododendron gardens, orange theme gardens, woodland gardens, native plant gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  8 feet or more apart for space between plants.

Growing Preferences

Gibraltar Azalea is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil and dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It grows much better when it has deep, moist, well-drained soil, morning sun, and filtered afternoon shade, and it likes its roots to be shaded by a mulch or a groundcover plant. As with most other azaleas it does not like wet feet, so make sure to plant in a well-drained site. To improve drainage in heavy clay soils thoroughly mix composted organic matter, such as bagged top soil or a planting soil, with the native soil.
