Description

Chamaecyprais obtusa 'Gitte', commonly known as Gitte Hinoki Cypress, is a slow-growing, dwarf evergreen conifer with a dense, mound-forming habit to 18 inches tall and maybe 2 feet wide over time. It features twisted stems and scale-like foliage that sometimes forms fans towards the tips of the stems. Its foliage emerges golden-yellow, maturing to green shades. Its more diminutive stature and unique form make it an excellent accent in smaller garden spaces and containers, where it is sure to be a captivating conversation piece.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to approximately 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide at maturity, the Gitte Hinoki Cypress is ideal for use as an accent or in spaced groupings in small garden spaces, or in containers, which can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor seating and living areas. It is a fine addition to Asian-themed gardens, conifer gardens, miniature gardens, and gold-themed gardens.

Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or in small, spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

The Gitte Hinoki Cypress is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow in moist, but well-drained, soil of average fertility, and prefers 5 or more hours of sunlight daily for the best foliage color and overall performance. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Avoid overwatering. In the absence of sufficient rainfall, provide only enough water to keep the soil damp to moist. Established plants are quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional watering during prolonged periods of dry weather in summer. No pruning required.
