Description
Exceptionally cold hardy, the Gold Nugget Ice Plant is an alpine species that can handle temperatures down to -30F in USDA Zone 4 and is heat hardy to Zone 9b. It forms a dense carpet of thick, succulent, evergreen, bright apple-green foliage 1 to 2 inches tall, spreading 18 inches or more wide. In late spring, large, shiny yellow, quilled flowers about the size of a quarter smother the foliage with continuous bloom thereafter through late summer. Thriving in dry, sandy, or gravelly soil, this hardy perennial succulent requires little to no water once established, which makes it a fine selection as a low border or groundcover, and is also excellent to fill gaps and crevices between stones and boulders, or as a soil cover in container gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 1 to 2 inches tall and spreading 18 or more inches wide, the Gold Nugget Ice Plant is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or groupings or as a border where space allows. It is also excellent as a spiller plant in containers or over walls. It looks very nice around rocks and boulders and is a fine addition to succulent and cactus gardens, rock gardens, yellow theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 12 to 18 inches apart for mass plantings
