Description

Discovered in Holland, 'Gold Rider' is beautiful golden variant of the ever-popular Leyland Cypress. It forms a pyramid of soft and feathery golden yellow foliage ideal for use in the landscape as a bright focal point specimen, grouping or privacy screen or hedge. Growing at about half the rate and half the size of the standard green Leyland Cypress, when all grown up this golden beauty might reach around 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide at its base. The golden color is concentrated at the branch tips, which provides a two-toned effect with the green interior foliage. Give this one as much sun as possible for the brightest foliage. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright pyramidal form 30 to 35 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the Gold Rider Leyland Cypress is ideal for use in sunny landscape borders as as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in privacy screen plantings. It is also very nice to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings or as an outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, bird gardens, wildlife gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  8 to 10 feet apart for hedges or screens; 16' or more apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Gold Rider Leyland Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest at least 7 hours of direct sunlight for the best and brightest foliage color. Has good drought tolerance when established. It is low maintenance requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally pyramidal form. That said, it responds very well to shearing to a more formal shape or for hedges.
