Description

'Golden Guinea' is a single-flowering variety of Kerria japonica adored for the thousands of large, 2.5" diameter, bright golden-yellow, single, rose-like flowers it displays from early through mid-late spring on a single established plant. Each flower presumably resembles the color and size of the guinea coin, hence the name. Commonly known as Japanese Kerria, it is a shade-loving bush that thrives in and lights up heavy to partially shaded areas in the landscape or garden from early to mid-late spring with its bright blossoms. The flowers have enormous appeal, but the blackberry bush-like, heavily veined, toothed, bright green leaves are attractive throughout the season, turning to yellow hues with the arrival of cooler temperatures in the fall. Occasionally, you may see a rebloom in the summer. Ideal for shady flowering shrub borders, woodland gardens, or as an accent in home foundation plantings, Golden Guinea is one of those wonderful, low-maintenance flowering shrubs that will always have you looking forward to its captivating spring bloom.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, Golden Guinea Kerria is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in shady to partially shaded woodland and flowering shrub borders. It is also a colorful accent in home foundation plantings, and is suitable for growing in pots, planters, and other containers. It is a fine addition to yellow-themed gardens, cut-flower gardens, Asian-themed gardens, cottage gardens, and perennial gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preference

Golden Guinea Japanese Kerria is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, loamy soils of average fertility, and in partial to full shade. Morning and late evening sun is okay, but direct afternoon sun causes flowers to be pale in color. Amend heavy clay soils to improve drainage. It is tolerant of dry soil when established. Kerria blooms on old wood from the previous year, so make sure to wait to prune until after flowering. May form suckers but these can be easily removed.
