Description

A bright, eye-catching specimen in the landscape, the Golden Korean Fir features slightly ascending and layered branches densely clothed with short but broad needles that are lemon-yellow above and silver beneath. The needle color transitions to a glowing light green during the summer. Abundant purple cones stand upright like 3" candles on the branches contrasting beautifully with the foliage. A slow grower that might add 6 inches or so in height per year, it has a more rounded shape when very young but develops a central leader forming a majestic pyramid 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide at the base when all grown up. Golden Korean Fir makes for a distinctive focal point specimen, corner plant in home foundation plantings, or an accent in mixed privacy screen plantings. In cool-summer climates of Zones 5-8 this one will tolerate full sun but prefers some filtered sun during the afternoon in hot summer climates.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, the Golden Korean Fir is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in spaced groupings where space allows in landscape borders. Though slow growing, it is a nice accent in mixed privacy screen plantings. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian gardens, yellow theme gardens and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 14 feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Korean Fir is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. This for does not like hot and humid climates.
