Description

Known as Golden Oregano or Golden Marjoram, Origanum vulgare 'Aureum' is a showy edible but ornamental perennial herb that is perfect for use as a groundcover in partially shaded to shady areas. Its fragrant foliage turns a vibrant golden yellow to chartreuse during the spring and fall seasons. With foliage that grows only 4 to 6 inches high, it spreads fairly quickly to form a dense patch that lights up shady areas and tolerates moderate foot traffic. Clusters of small lavender flowers in summer attract butterflies.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 6 inches tall and spreading 18 inches or more, Golden Oregano is ideal for use as a groundcover in garden beds or border along paths and walkways. Also nice as a solo or mixed with other plants in pots, planters and other containers. Plant it near patios, decks, porches and other outdoor living areas where the attractive foliage and pretty flowers can be enjoyed from close up and the leaves more convenient for harvesting. A natural choice for herb and culinary gardens and a fine addition to herb gardens, yellow theme gardens, cottage gardens and rock gardens.

Growing Preferences

Oregano is easy to grow in most any somewhat loose and moist to somewhat dry soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. Afternoon sun is best avoided. We suggest harvesting fresh leaves right before you'll use them. Otherwise, dry and store the leaves for later use.
