Description
Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, the Golden Spirit Smokebush provides outstanding multi-season interest in the landscape with foliage and flower color. In spring, its rounded, eucalyptus-like leaves emerge a brilliant chartreuse, transitioning to golden-yellow by summer and then vibrant shades of orange, coral-pink, and red with cooler temperatures in fall. In midsummer, abundant cloud-like plumes of soft pinkish-white flowers appear all over the bush, looking like puffs of smoke, hence the common name. Growing up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, Golden Spirit is perfect for bringing vibrant color to smaller garden spaces where larger growing smoke trees just won't fit. Though smaller in stature, as this smokebush grows, its lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, the Golden Spirit Smokebush is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in groupings in larger spaces. It is a fine addition to yellow or gold theme gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs landscape).
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for a solid hedge; 8 feet for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Golden Spirit Smokebush is very easy to grow in almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, including poor, rock and clay soils, and full sun to mostly sun for best foliage color and flowering. It has high drought tolerance when established. Constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Exceptionally low maintenance with little to no pruning necessary.
