Description

This is the rare single-trunk tree-form version of the Golden Spring Winter Hazel, scientifically known as Corylopsis spicata. It is lesser-known than other late winter to early spring flowering shrubs such as Forysthia and Quince, but we think it is a more beautiful and elegant shrub. Golden Spring Winter Hazel is extra special in that its leaves emerge bright yellow with rouge-red tinting, turning to a golden-yellow in the sun or soft chartreuse to lime green in the shade and finally to golden and orange hues in fall. Heralding the arrival of spring in late winter, LOADS of drooping racemes packed with fragrant, luminous, soft yellow flowers appear along all the bare, zig-zagging stems before the leaves emerge. Growing to about eight feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, Golden Spring is a magnificent addition to a sunny or shady woodland border or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It will always have you looking forward to its glorious winter bloom.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 8 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Golden Spring Winter Hazel Tree is ideal as a specimen, or two can be used to frame an entrance. We think it looks best in woodland gardens and borders and around outdoor living spaces and sitting areas where the fragrant flowers and colorful foliage can be enjoyed from close up. It is a fine addition to yellow-theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens, and woodland gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Golden Spring Winter Hazel performs well in full sun, shade, and everything in between. Though leaves emerge yellow in the sun or shade, they will be more yellow during summer with more sun and chartreuse to lime green in the shade. It prefers organically rich, acidic, moist, but well-drained soil. We mulch plants before summer arrives to help conserve moisture. That said, 'Golden Spring' is a Corylopsis spicata, which is known to be more drought tolerant.
