When left to grow naturally, Pinus parviflora 'Tenysu-kazu', commonly called Goldilocks Japanese White Pine, is a wonderful selection to provide an artistic element in the landscape with both its form and color. Though it doesn't sway in the breeze, its upright and irregular pyramidal form has a unique sweeping habit creating what appears to be graceful "movement in the garden. In spring, bright yellow vertical foliage candles emerge transitioning as the needles elongate to green with soft golden yellow higlights on the top half of the needle and silver undertones. The foliage color intensifies during winter so that from a distance the entire tree appears glowing golden yellow. Upon closer inspection the two-toned green and yellow varietgation is revealed. For optimum color, seek a balance between sun and shade. At 7 to 8 feet tall and maybe 5 feet or so wide at its base, Goldiliocks is a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and containers and looks right at home in Japanese themed garden.

Note: We've noticed the foliage color on Goldilocks is a little brighter when the tree receives some filtered sun during the midafternoon hours. 

Goldilocks Japanese White Pine grows best in a moist but well-drained fertile soil in full sun to part shade. We've noticed that the foliage color is a little brighter when the tree receives some filtered sun during the midafternoon hours. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning however the candles on this pine can be pruned by up to 50 percent of their length to control the size of the tree and branches can be selectively removed to form very interesting and unique topiary forms. That said, with its beatiful natural sweeping habit we suggest leaving this one alone except to remove a stray branch or additional leader that might be spoiling the shape.
