Description

Easy to grow in poor and dry soils, Green Santolina, also called Lavender Cotton, is an evergreen perennial herb that forms a tidy mound of fragrant grass-green foliage similar in appearance to thread leaf cypress, which adds a fine texture to the garden. In late spring to early summer small, abundant and showy pompom shape bright yellow flowers held by thin stems rise above the foliage. It is a drought tolerant plant that requires a well-drained soil and once established will require water only in prolonged drought.

The dried leaves are used in sachets and potpourris and the extracted oil were used in perfumes. Historically, the foliage once was used as an insecticide. It can also be used medicinally on insect bites as pain relief.

Landscape Uses

Growing 1.5 to 2 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, Green Santolina has the added appeal of distinctly sea green foliage and yellow flowers that make it suitable for use in the ornamental landscape or perennial or herb gardens. It is a natural choice for the herb garden and a fine addition to coastal gardens, rock gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, yellow theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs.

Growing Preferences

Green Santolina is easy to grow in most any somewhat loose and moist to somewhat dry soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. Plants will tolerate shade but foliage won't be as dense and foliage might flop. We suggest 7 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. It will tolerate dry periods, but flowers best with a lightly moist soil. Can be pruned as desired for shaping and fuller plants.
