Description
The Green Strap Japanese Maple is an extremely rare upright selection featuring deeply cut feathery leaves that add a fine, soft texture to the garden. In spring, the leaves emerge light green, edged in red, gradually turning to a handsome, rich, darker green for summer. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall, the foliage puts on a spectacular show of brilliant red, orange, and yellow shades. We know it grows to around 10 feet in height and half as wide in 10 years, so we are guessing it might reach 15 to 18 feet tall and half as wide at maturity. Its smaller stature and upright habit make it a perfect candidate for smaller garden spaces and containers or as an accent tree in home foundation plantings and around patios, porches, and other outdoor sitting or living spaces. It has demonstrated good heat and sun tolerance in our gardens, though our tree does get some filtered sun during the midafternoon hours. 'Green Strap' doesn't have the cool or pretty name as some others, but what it lacks in a name it makes up for in beauty. A remarkably attractive maple!
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Green Strap Japanese Maple is best used as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or containers to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant it in groupings of three or use two to frame an entryway.
Suggested Spacing: At least 12 feet apart for space between trees
Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. Click on the link below under Helpful Articles for Japanese Maple container planting instructions.
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is, if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won't interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicately looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough, long-lived trees. They are also very easy to grow.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally, they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, there are many sun-tolerant Japanese maple varieties, one of which is Green Strap.
Japanese maples will grow in most any average garden soil. They prefer moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic, so make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
