Description

Discovered at Bickelhaupt Arboretum in Iowa as a witches broom on Pinus strobus ‘Contorta.' 'Green Twist' is one of if not the smallest of Eastern White Pines, making it a perfect fit for small garden spaces and containers. Slow growing, it forms a globe maybe 3 feet tall and equally wide at ten years of age with small bunches of blue-green needles that twist and curve in all directions to provide a delightful texture. The new growth in spring is a brilliant light green. We're not sure, but we think that mature height might be around 5 feet tall and wide. Green Twist adds unusual and fantastic texture to the landscape and will surely be a conversation piece, especially when positioned on or around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Green Twist Dwarf Eastern White Pine is ideal for use as a specimen in small rock gardens, conifer gardens, miniature gardens, native gardens, and Asian theme gardens. It is also suitable for containers. It is also a nice accent in home foundation plantings near an entryway, patio, or other sitting areas.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings 5 feet or more apart

Growing Preferences

The Green Twist Eastern White Pine grows best in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun but will tolerate and appreciate some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates. As with so many other ornamental shrubs and trees, a constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. It does not require pruning.
