Description
This is the globe topiary form of the Grey Owl Juniper, a fine-textured North American native evergreen with soft and feathery silvery grayish-blue foliage that stands out in the landscape. It can be trimmed once or twice yearly for a slightly shaggy look or several times yearly for a tighter form. Its soothing foliage color, form, and texture make it an excellent accent specimen in sunny garden beds and containers. Two can be planted in the ground or pots to accentuate and frame an entrance. It can also be used as a home foundation plant. It is hardy and easy to grow in well-draining soil and plenty of sun almost anywhere in the United States, USDA Zones 3-9.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Grey Owl Juniper is excellent as a specimen in containers, sunny landscape borders, and garden beds. Two can be used to frame an entrance. It is also great for home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, formal gardens, topiary gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Grey Owl Juniper is easy to grow in well-drained soil and full or mostly sun. We suggest six or more hours of sunlight daily. When established in the ground, it is exceptionally drought tolerant. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot or other harmful plant diseases. Trim once or twice annually for a slightly shaggy appearance or several times yearly for a tight, more formal appearance. When growing in a container, ensure it has a drainage hole(s). We suggest lining the pot's interior with a porous landscape fabric such as weed barrier cloth to prevent the drainage hole from becoming clogged with roots. Fill the pot with bagged top soil or a 50/50 mixture of bagged top soil and potting mix.
