Description

This is the tried and true Hardy Yellow Ice Plant, Delosperma nubigenum, which is more cold hardy (to -30F) and spreads much further than many of the newer selections available today. It forms a dense, bright green carpet of thick, succulent foliage 2 to 3 inches high by 24 or more inches wide, In late spring to early summer the foliage becomes smothered with quilled, bright yellow flowers that have cute, golden-orange centers. The evergreen foliage turns red during the winter months providing extra appeal in the garden. Thriving in dry, sandy, or gravelly soil, this hardy perennial succulent requires little to no water once established, which makes it a fine selection as a low border or groundcover, to fill gaps and crevices between stones and boulders, or as a soil cover in container gardens.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 inches tall and spreading 24 inches or more wide, the Hardy Yellow Ice Plant is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or as a soil cover in container gardens, or in groupings or massed along the borders of walkways and paths, patios and garden beds. Very nice around rocks and boulders. A fine addition to succulent and cactus gardens, rock gardens, yellow theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass planting

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, Ice Plant is very easy to grow. It requires a well-drained lightly moist to dry soil and is very drought tolerant when established. Will tolerate rainy periods but constantly soggy or wet soil is a killer. It performs best in full sun but will tolerate part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best overall performance.
