Description
Nothing says tropical more in the garden than elephant ears. While many types of elephant ears aren't cold hardy, such as the Alocasia varieties, Colocasia varieties such as 'Hawaiian Punch' are dependable outdoor perennials. A member of the Royal Hawaiian Elephant Ear Series from the breeding program of Hawaii's Dr. John Cho, 'Hawaiin Punch' can handle winter low temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit when growing in the ground. It can also be grown in pots, which can be overwintered indoors if necessary or kept inside year round as a houseplant. Hawaiian Punch forms about a 3 foot tall by 3 to 4 foot wide clump of large green leaves on bright red stems so is sure to bring a colorful look and feel of the tropics to the landscape or patio. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun or part shade, is super heat and humidity tolerant, and prefers life on the moist to wet side, even in containers submerged in the garden pond. Sure to be an eye-catcher and conversation piece!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright clump 36 to 40 inches tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Hawaiian Punch Elephant Ear thrives in garden beds or in containers that can be situated on or around patios and other outdoor living spaces or even submerged to the soil level in the pot in the garden pond. It can also be grown as an indoor houseplant year round. In the garden, it is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, or in groupings where space allows. A fine addition to tropical gardens, perennial gardens, water gardens, red theme gardens and indoor gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid groupings or borders; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Hawaiian Punch Elephant Ear is very easy to grow in most any moist to wet soil and full sun or shade. It prefers a consistently moist to wet soil and can even be grown in containers situated at water level in the margins of the garden pond. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.
