The Heiliger Hain Switch Grass provides four-season interest in the landscape. It is a robust yet smaller grower forming an upright, narrow, fountain-like clump to only 4 feet tall and 2.5 to 3 feet wide at maturity. The foliage is blue-green during spring, turning to rich red shades in summer, becoming a deep purple-burgundy in fall and wheat color through winter. The grassy clump is topped in summer with airy clusters of pretty pinkish-wheat color flowers. The flower panicles persist for months and are excellent for cutting and use in cut flower arrangements. A significant asset to wildlife, quail and songbirds gobble up the tiny seeds and use the sturdy foliage clumps as a cold-weather shelter. A stately, easy-to-grow, and versatile North American native grass, Heiliger Hain’s manageable size makes it well-suited for mid-border positions in ornamental grass or perennial gardens, containers, xeriscape or rain gardens, as a soil stabilizer on slopes, and even around black walnut trees.

Heiliger Haun Switch Grass is very easy to grow in a wide range of soils, even clay, sandy, and dry soils, though it prefers moist soil. It doesn't like organically rich soil, so there's no need to add compost or humus to the native soil when planting. It grows best in full sun but will tolerate some light shade. Too much shade and plants might become floppy. Five or more hours of sunlight daily is suggested. Maintenance is minimal. Cut clumps back to the ground in late winter before new growth emerges in spring.
