Description

A gorgeous evergreen with wonderful texture and form, Hicks Yew is a refined columnar shrub with high adaptability and versatility in design. Though it might reach 20 feet tall in as many years and 6 feet wide at maturity, with an annual pruning in late winter to early spring it can easily be kept at half that size. Its small footprint and deep green needle-like but soft foliage makes it a fine choice as as a vertical accent specimen in small garden spaces or as a narrow solid hedge or 4-season privacy screen for narrow spaces. Highly adaptable, you can grow Hicks Yew in sun or shade and all but constantly wet soils in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4-7.

Taxus x media is a hybrid designation for a number of crosses of English yew (Taxus baccata) and Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata). These hybrids are noted for combining the ornamental excellence of English yew with the winter hardiness of Japanese yew.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing slowly from 10 to 20 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide depending on pruning, the Hicks Columnar Yew is ideal for use as an accent specimen in small sunny or shady garden beds or in spaced groupings or as a dense hedge or privacy screen where space is limited. Also a nice centerpiece in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens and formal gardens.

Growing Preferences

Hicks Columnar Yew is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and sun or shade. It does not like a poorly drained constantly soggy or wet soil. It does not require pruning however responds very well to it. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to emerge. It grows about 6 to 8 inches in height per year so we suggest maybe removing 3 to 4 inches of growth at pruning time.
