Description
Hybridized at Holden Arboretum for superb disease resistance and outstanding foliage and bloom, the Holden’s Pink Flare Rhododendron is a magnificent new cultivar sporting dense, thick, and lustrous evergreen leaves that are an excellent backdrop for the abundant, large clusters of funnel-shaped bubblegum pink flowers with frilly petals. The dorsal petal is adorned with dark red freckles for a wonderful contrast. A lower grower to maybe 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, Holden's Pink Flare is a good fit as an accent shrub in smaller garden spaces, or in groupings or as a natural hedge where space will allow in larger, partially shaded to sunny landscape and woodland borders. Vigorous, heat and cold-tolerant (-20F), and extremely showy, this glorious beauty will always have you looking forward to spring!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a mound 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Holden's Pink Flair Rhododendron is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller spaces or in groupings or as a colorful natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. In hot-summer climates, we always suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. A fine accent or grouping in home and building foundations. Does especially well on fertile embankments, hillsides, and slopes. It can be grown in large pots. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, rhododendron and azalea gardens, Asian or zen gardens, and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
A little good advice goes a long way toward successfully growing Rhododendrons. When planted correctly and in the right spot, they are easy to grow and care for.
Rhododendrons thrive in a moist but well-drained acidic soil rich in organic matter and part shade, preferably morning sun with afternoon shade or heavily filtered sun. All-day dappled shade is fine as well. In cool-summer climates, most rhododendron varieties will tolerate full sun. Remember that constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic for Rhododendrons, whether growing in the ground or in containers. Some soils, such as heavy clay, quick-draining sand, or otherwise poor soils, must be amended to provide sufficient nutrients, better soil drainage, and/or moisture retention. In containers, select a pot with a drainage hole(s) and use a 50/50 blend of professional potting mix and potting soil. Avoid using any native soil (dug from the ground) in pots. Feed Rhododendrons after they bloom with an acid-loving formula such as an Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Food.
