Description
Hybridized at the Holden Arboretum for superb disease resistance and outstanding foliage and bloom, Holden’s Pink Rhododendron is a beauty sporting dense, thick, and lustrous, rich evergreen leaves that make an excellent backdrop for the abundant, large clusters of dark pink buds that open to funnel-shaped, candy-pink flowers with a splash of yellow on the dorsal petal. Reaching 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, Holden's Pink is a good fit as an accent plant in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings, or in groupings, or as a natural hedge where space allows in larger, partially shaded landscapes and woodland borders. Vigorous, heat and cold-tolerant (-20F), and extremely showy, this glorious beauty will always have you looking forward to spring!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, Holden's Pink Rhododendron is ideal as a specimen in smaller spaces and home foundation plantings. Where space allows, it is stunning in groupings or as a natural hedge in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. In hot summer climates, we always suggest finding some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. It does exceptionally well on fertile embankments, hillsides, and slopes. It can be grown in large pots. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, rhododendron and azalea gardens, Asian or zen gardens, and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
A little good advice goes a long way toward successfully growing Rhododendrons. When planted correctly and in the right spot, they are easy to grow and care for.
Rhododendrons thrive in moist but well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter, and in part shade, preferably with morning sun and afternoon shade or heavily filtered sun. All-day dappled shade is okay as well. In cool-summer climates, most rhododendron varieties will tolerate full sun. Remember that constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic for Rhododendrons, whether they are growing in the ground or containers. Some soils, such as heavy clay or quick-draining sand, or those that are otherwise poor, must be amended to provide sufficient nutrients, better soil drainage, and/or improved moisture retention. In containers, select a pot with one or more drainage holes and use a 50/50 blend of professional potting mix and potting soil. Avoid using any native soil (dug from the ground) in pots. Feed Rhododendrons after they bloom with an acid-loving formula such as Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Food.
