Description

Rigorously tested and known for their high resistance to disease and cold conditions, Rhododendrons in the Holden Series are highly ornamental and dependably cold-hardy to USDA Zone 5 where winter low temperatures can drop to -20F. The most recent addition to the series, 'Holden's Red' has a similar habit and bloom form to others in the series but might grow a little larger to about 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide. It is densely clothed in handsome, thick, leathery dark green leaves that serve as an excellent background to showcase the abundant, large, truly stunning flowers with ruffly red petals that are lighter in the center of the flower for a beautiful two-tone contrast. 'Holden's Red' is a good fit as an accent shrub in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings, or grouped or as a natural hedge where space allows in larger landscape and woodland borders. Vigorous, heat and cold-tolerant (-20F), and extremely showy, this glorious beauty will always have you looking forward to spring!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a dense mound 4 to 5 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Holden's Red Rhododendron is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller spaces or in groupings or as a colorful natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. In hot-summer climates, we always suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. It is also a fine accent or grouping in home foundation plantings and does especially well on fertile embankments, hillsides, and slopes. Can be grown in large pots. A fine addition to red theme gardens, rhododendron and azalea gardens, Asian, and woodland gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

When it comes to success growing Rhododendrons, a little good advice goes a long way. When planted right and in the right spot, Rhododendrons are very easy to grow and care for.

Rhododendrons thrive in a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part shade, preferably morning sun with afternoon shade or heavily filtered sun. All-day dappled shade is fine as well. Keep in mind that whether growing in the ground or containers, constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic for Rhododendrons. Some soils, such as heavy clay or otherwise poor soils, might need to be amended to provide sufficient nutrients, better soil drainage, and/or moisture retention in quick-draining sandy soil. In containers, select a pot with a drainage hole(s) and use a 50/50 blend of professional potting mix and potting soil. Avoid using any native soil in pots. Feed Rhododendrons after they bloom with an acid-loving formula such as an Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Food
