Description
The Ice N' Roses 'Early Red' Helleborus lives up to its name getting the Helleborus blooming season kicked off as early as November, then continuing all the way through April! The long-lasting flowers are a deep purple-red and glow when backlit by the sun. The plant itself is very robust and long-lived as well, living for decades in the garden. Unlike many Helleborus that have nodding flowers, the flowers of Early Red are outward and even upward facing. The flowers stand out nicely against the dark green evergreen leaves. Virtually problem-free, this delightful cool-season bloomer graces the dappled shade of woodland gardens at a time when not much else is blooming in the landscape. A wonderful addition to lightly to deeply shaded beds as well as container gardens. Will tolerate full sun in cooler climates.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense mound 15 to 18 inches tall and up to 30 inches wide, Early Red Helleborus is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings or as a border along walkways and paths. The perfect plant to grow under large shade trees, decks, covered porches and any other shady location. Don't think you have any shade? Look on the east side of your home. A fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, red theme gardens, winter gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings; 48 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Helleborus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to shade. It is perfect for planting under large shade trees, tall decks and other shady structures where not much sun shines. That said, morning or evening sun or all-day filtered sun is fine. Avoid direct afternoon sun. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. If needed, we remove any damaged or discolored foliage in mid winter before the flowers emerge. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
