Description
Discovered in the Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh, Scotland, the Inverleith Scotch Pine is truly a glowing beauty, which is why it's also commonly called the Ghost Pine. Reason being, its creamy white and blue-green variegated needles give it that ghost-ish appearance. If you're afraid of ghosts, it could be said that it has a Frosty the Snowman look:-) Cool thing is, it retains its color year round, and even its candles in spring are white. Very low maintenance, drought tolerant and easy to grow, Inverleith forms a dense pyramid to 25 feet tall and 12 feet wide at its base...maybe taller and wider in optimum conditions...so give this one ample space to grow in a sunny to partially shaded environment. Extremely cold hardy to -50F, but not as heat tolerant, gardeners in zones 2a-7b can enjoy this beauty.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a pyramidal form to 25 feet tall and 12 feet wide or more, the Inverleith Scotch Pine is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in spaced groupings in sunny to partly shaded landscape borders. It's also nice to frame the coners of tall homes and other buildings or use to to frame a large entrance. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, white theme gardens, bird gardens, Asian gardens and Zen gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 15' or more apart in spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
The Inverleith Scotch Pine is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. It has high drought tolerance when established. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil. It retains its dense pyramidal form with no pruning needed. That said, candle pruning can be perfomed annualy to maintain a smaller size tree.
