Description
Here's a unique one for Hydrangea lovers! Invincibelle Lace Smoothy Hydrangea is a beautiful North American native featuring large and lovely lacecap flowers all summer long. Its flower clusters consist of a center mound of tiny, mauve-pink fertile flowers surrounded by a ring of pure white florets that stand out beautifully against blue-green leaves. The flowers are held atop contrasting, sturdy, dark ruby-red stems and are sure to attract butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Its natural look and form, to 5 feet high and wide, is perfect for adding elegance to partially shaded areas. A captivating accent specimen, grouping, or natural hedge for full sun in cool to mild summer climates in the North (USDA Zones 3a-6b), or morning sun with filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sun is most intense in the South.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound, 5 feet tall and equally wide, the Invincibelle Lace Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces. Where space allows, it is stunning in groupings or as a natural hedge. Right at home in woodland borders, and it is also a fine addition to hydrangea gardens, cut flower gardens, pink or purple themed gardens, cottage gardens, native gardens, and butterfly and pollinator gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 7' or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Invincibelle Lace Hydrangea is very easy to grow in moist well-drained soil with average or better fertility and full sun to part shade in cooler northern zones 3 to 6 and part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in warmer southern zones 7-8. At least five hours of sunlight daily are recommended for optimal flowering, regardless of the location. Constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic.
Pruning Tip: In early spring, just as the new growth begins to emerge on the stems, cut the plant back by about one-third of its height to ensure the largest blooms. That's it!
