Description

A globe-shaped dwarf variety of the North American native Jeffrey Pine, 'Joppi' forms almost a sphere to only 10 feet tall and 10 feet wide when all grown up. Even though its a dwarf, it has the same long needles as its larger growing cousins, which can be 8 to 12 inches long. The straight needles are arranged in basketball-sized puffs appearing as soft globes. A very tough pine that will grow in harsh conditions at low or high elevations in well-drained sandy or clay soils with highly acidic to neutral soil. On the west coast, it is very heat and drought tolerant once established. Perfect for rock gardens and mountain gardens and in containers as well. A captivating specimen that is sure to be a conversation piece!

NOTE:  Being that it's a west coast native pine, Pinus jeffreyi may not tolerate the combination of intense heat and humidity in the deep South or southern coastal areas.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a globe 10 feet tall and equally wide, the Joppi Jeffrey Pine is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces or in spaced ghroupings at 12 feet apart where space allows. Also a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  12 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Joppi Jeffrey Pine is easy to grow in a moist but well soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. It prefers an acidic to neutral soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.5 on the pH scale. It is very drought tolerant when established. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning.
