Description

A long-blooming South American native shrub that makes for a wonderful garden or container plant, Juiced Orange Jessamine (Cestrum) blooms from spring through summer, often to frost. Abundant clusters of fragrant tubular flowers appear more golden yellow to us than they do orange, so we're not sure why the "orange" in the name, but think it's referring to orange juice, which is more a yellow color. One way or another, we love this plant! In our gardens, the jessamine-like fragrance is more noticeable in the evening and through the night than during the day, when the butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators find the nectar-rich flowers most attractive. No need to deadhead the flowers as they're self-cleaning and keep on coming through the season. Dark green lustrous foliage on a bushy rounded mound to 3 to 4 feet tall and wide serves as the perfect backdrop to the flowers. A colorful accent in small garden spaces and especially nice in groupings or as a hedge where space allows. Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 7-11.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, the Juiced Orange Jessamine is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces, in containers, or in groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded borders. It is ideal around patios, decks, porches and other outdoor spaces where the fragrance and hummingbirds and butterflies feeding can be enjoyed from closeup. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, hummingbird and butterfly gardens, yellow gardens, tropical gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3.5 feet apart for solid hedge

Growing Preferences

The Juiced Orange Jessamine is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We've seen no serious insect or disease problems and plants are moderately drought tolerant when established. In warmer climates the plant will be evergreen to semi evergreen. In zone 7, it will die back like a Buddleia but will re-grow from the roots and still flower. In colder climates north of zone 7 it can be grown as a patio plant and overwintered in a sunroom or other well-lit space.
