Description

Cryptomeria japonica 'Knaptonensis' is a rare, dwarf Japanese Cedar discovered in 1930 on Madre Island in Lago Maggiore. The cultivar name refers to the town of Knapton, an English village in Norfolk County, United Kingdom. A slower grower, it forms a broad pyramidal to conical small tree 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at maturity. What's most outstanding and sure to make Knapton White-Tipped Japanese Cedar an attention-getter and conversation piece in the garden is its new growth, which emerges pure snow-white from top to bottom of the plant in spring and throughout the warm seasons, maturing to a rich blue-green. The winter color is a butter yellow. Hardy in USDA Zones 5-9, it prefers partial shade wherever it's grown. Morning and evening sun are fine, but provide afternoon shade. It is an outstanding specimen in small to medium gardens and around outdoor sitting and living spaces where you and guests can enjoy the foliage from close up.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Knapton White-Tipped Japanese Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings where space allows. It is a fine addition to white theme gardens, conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens, and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  best as a specimen or in spaced groupings

Growing Preferences

Knapton Japanese Cedar is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade. Morning and evening sun is okay but make sure to provide shade in the afternoon to avoid burning the beautiful white new growth. All-day filtered sun should be okay as well. It prefers not to dry out when young but is very drought-tolerant when established. It does not like constantly soggy or waterlogged soil, so provide just enough water to maintain a damp to lightly moist soil until established. We've seen no serious disease or insect problems and the deer that visit our gardens don't touch it. It can be lightly pruned in late winter for size control or shaping purposes.
