Description

One of the true dwarf Japanese Maples perfect for growing in containers or small garden spaces, 'Koto Maru', which translates to "rounded harp," might reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide when all grown up. We think the name comes from the rounded center lobe on each leaf. Skilled gardeners can maintain it at half that height or even smaller for bonsai. The quarter-sized leaves are also very small, lending a unique texture in the garden. The dainty leaves emerge a bright yellow-green with an amber to red border. During summer the foliage goes to a medium to dark green with bronze to pinkish red new leaves which emerge throughout the season. Fall brings bright yellow to orange shades finishing a bright red. A cute but tough and long lived little tree tree that requires little maintenance and, like its parent 'Beni Hime', stands up to both the heat and sun.

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Koto Maru Japanese Maple is best used in design as an accent specimen in smaller garden beds or containers. Can also be used in spaced groupings where space allows. Be careful not to overcrowd this little gem with other shrubs or trees.

Suggested Spacing: At least 6 feet for space between trees

Note:  One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is, if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won't interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow.

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, Koto Maru has shown very good tolerance for full sun or part shade.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
